Every Loser Wins

Was a number one hit back in 1986 for a well-known soap actor and if I am going to keep up this theme of titling every match report with a song title you’ll have to forgive me for scraping the barrel with this one (and its only week three!!)

But if we consider the title we have to agree that we can only be winners if we take on board Sunday’s defeat to Senghenydd, learn from where we went wrong and start to concentrate for the full match.

With a Police cavalcade rushing Harri Williams from Tredegar we started with sixteen players and a strong two sides. But it didn’t start well for the Apples who came up against some strong runners who also had a hefty appetite for our tags and we found ourselves 5-1 down after the first period, Griff Tovey with the only try. The Apples did though have some great tagging success through Shay Edwards, Josh Johnson & Max Baldwin coupled with some strong runs from Aimee Lock and Elliot Hall.

As the Apples retreated for a much-needed drinks break the Bananas took to the pitch looking to close the gap on their visitors. The Dale started off well with good yardage made by Noah Young, Alfie Short and Kingsley Parry-Lewis and the tries started to flow with Brody Baker and Olly Morris getting themselves on the scoresheet but at the end of the period Senghenydd still led the contest with a 8-3 score line.

The next period was a close affair with Harri Williams looking resplendent with his newly acquired tan gaining some good yardage and supported by Olly Bishop and Aaron Nightingale but no matter how much the Apples banged on the door they couldn’t cross the whitewash. The final segment of the game saw the Referee blow his whistle more than he wanted as both sides got a little ‘physical’. Olly Morris and Josh Bowen got themselves on the scoresheet and we saw Poppy Crewe put in a run which we all know she is capable of.

At the end of the match the Dale had to concede they were beaten by the better side going down with a 10-05 score line and we all must set our sights on the return fixture as the benchmark to see how we improve over the season.

Player of the match for the third game was the same player who won the award at the third game last year. Hannah Benger showed great ability to nearly score a try but was tagged just before the line. Her offloading after the tags was spot on every time and she did not stop from the first minute to the last, she really is a credit to the team, Well done Hannah.

Lots to work on, especially that offside line!! We need to calm down a bit but not lose that fiery passion and spread out across the pitch in defence and attack, not much then!!

A prize to the parent who can name the singer of this week’s song title at training (I doubt most of you weren’t even born then!!)
