He’s the Greatest Dancer (the world has ever seen)

Rugby should always be about new experiences. Visiting sides and villages where you’ve never been before and meeting other rugby people. For many of the Crazy Eights it will have been their first time travelling to Treharris but an unfamiliar environment certainly didn’t put them off their rugby as they ran out comfortable 18 – 7 winners.

With 18 squad players attending at some god forsaken hour it was very difficult to ensure everyone had good game time but it had to go on a first come first serve basis with the Fantastic Four playing the last two segments.

The Dale fielded two very strong sides with the Apples going out and looking for tries and tags straight from the first whistle. Some excellent defence soon saw the ball turned over to the Dale and if you want to get yourself on the scoresheet you give it to Griff Tovey and he certainly didn’t disappoint whizzing in for the first try of the morning. It was clear that the Apples were too strong for Treharris and they continually pushed their opponents back and scored more tries through Brody Baker and Max Baldwin. Josh Bowen was tagging like a tagging monster and this gave Oakdale go forward ball which presented further try scoring opportunities for Albie Wynn (check that celebration), Kingsley Parry-Lewis and another for that man Tovey.

With the score at 6-2 the Bananas took to the field looking to build on the great work of the first ten minutes. It wasn’t long before the scoreboard was moving once more with Olly Morris scoring a quickfire brace. Treharris just couldn’t get any sort of sustained possession as the Dale were constantly taking their tags and this allowed further scores for Josh Johnson, Elliot Hall and for Olly Morris to record his first hat-trick of the season. Hannah Benger and Noah Young were excellent in support and defence and just would not let their opponents get any sort of advantage. The half was finished off with a strong run from Olly Bishop when he outpaced two defenders but was tagged just short of the line. The half ended and at the halfway stage the Dale held a 11-4 lead.

With three out of the Fantastic Four remaining with Aaron Nightingale deciding to take a week off it was left to Poppy Crewe, Amy Locke and Harri Williams to pick up where the Apples and Bananas left off. Ably supported by the Apples and Bananas it was Harri who got himself of the scoresheet with his first run of the day but the half was a bit closer with Treharris scoring two tries of their own (maybe we need to work on our fitness?) Although, the Dale just wouldn’t let up with strong runs from Alfie Short, Amy and Poppy they ensured they won the third segment with further tries from Albie Wynn and Harri Williams.

The last segment went much the same way as the previous three with the Crazy Eights piling on the pressure and coming away with tries. Even though many of the players only had a couple of minutes each in the final two segments they made use of every second with Noah Young scoring a good solo try, Harri Williams getting his third for his hat-trick and Griff Tovey getting his third and fourth tries to round off an excellent performance.

Coach Rhys gave special mention to Shay Edwards at the end who played excellently throughout the game. He gave good support and passed very well every time he had the ball in his hands. He surely is improving every week and is a great asset to the squad.

The Player of the Match award was carefully considered but both coaches were unanimous in their decision. The award went to Elliot Hall who every time he had the ball in his hands he went forward, he tagged like his life depended on it and scored an excellent try of his own. Both coaches did comment that they hoped the cold weather doesn’t get the better of him as he will be a loss to the side if it is a bit chilly outside. For those of you wondering about this week’s song title it is a nod to our player of the match this week. If you haven’t seen him on the dancefloor at one of our parties you have missed something special. When asked about his award this week Elliot replied ‘I’m so happy I am going to Moonwalk to school tomorrow!! Shamone!!’
