New Tredegar v Oakdale

Oakdale Under 8's once again hit the road and traveled up the Gwent valley to face New Tredegar and were looking to put an end to a run of loses, with the sun shinning and bright blue skies it was hopefully a recipe for some exciting rugby from both sides.

Oakdale were like coiled springs ready for action and had obviously had their weetabix as Gethin Tudbull pounced on a spilt pass and looked to open his account for the day but for a try saving tackle denying him.  However, close on his shoulder in support was William Lewis who took a fine pass to score the first try. 1- 0 Oakdale

It was not long before Oakdale were on the attack again with birthday boy Ollie Penny showing that despite his advancement in years he can still mix it with the youngsters to jink his way to the line for Oakdales second try. 2- 0 Oakdale.

Oakdale had made a good start and were looking to increase their lead and scored again through Gethin Tudbull. 3-0 Oakdale.

Ollie Penny was gifted with a chance to pick up a lose pass, and made his way to the line, not needing the support of Joe Lewis to make it 4-0 Oakdale.

Oakdale were clearly in the mood to party and Gethin Tudbull picked up a pass in the centre of the field and showed the watching crowd his snake hips to weave his way pass the defence like Shane Williams to score his second try  5-0 Oakdale.

Despite the score New Tredegar would not give up and were constantly on the attack and were rewarded with a try 5-1 Oakdale.

Oakdale were keen to get the game underway and to put into practice their passing skills, a fabulous team effort saw Charlie Williams pass to Gethin Tudbull who took the ball forward to slip another pass to Joe Lewis who found himself in space and scored Oakdales sixth try.

Oakdale were solid in defence and prevented New Tredegar from crossing the whitewash with New Tredegar ending the first half on the attack.

2nd Half

Oakdale started the second half and with New Tredegar still digesting the half time oranges Ollie Penny grabbed his third try of the match, Oakdale 7 - 1.

Despite the score New Tredegar kept on attacking and showed great resolve and scored in the corner to get their second try - Oakdale 7-2

Ioan Herbert scored a brace of tries in the to make the score Oakdale 9 - 2

Oakdale were encouraged to pass the ball around and Roman Taylor and Ruben Williams  linked up well to put a final gift wrapped pass to the birthday boy Ollie Penny to score his fourth try and truly deserve his birthday cake after this performance. Oakdale 10-2.

Both teams were keen to play another half which is a credit to both teams, with Oakdale clearly having fun, trying to play some lovely passing rugby, Gethin Tudbull took the ball up the field who passed to William Lewis who trundled up the field further before slipping a pass out the back door to Joe Lewis. Oakdale 11 - 2

New Tredegar responded with a try of themselves to make the score 11 -3.

Oakdale re-started the match and were playing deep into New Tredegar half setting up camp on their try line, with only a couple of meters out Roman Taylor flew through the air like a leaping salmon to grab a try Oakdale 12-3.

Ioan Herbert then grabbed his third try by this time the scorer was beginning to run out of ink and superlatives to describe the way they were playing, Oakdale 13-3

Oakdale were looking to score the final try of the match and did not disappoint and another team effort try saw William Lewis make a break to pass to Charlie Williams who evaded the rushing defence and passed to Ioan Herbert who sprinted for the line and beat the last gasp defence in placing the ball down to score the final try of the match.

Final Score New Tredegar 3 - Oakdale 14

Man of the match was Ioan Herbert after scoring four tries, and was impressive in defence.

All the boys wished Ollie Penny happy birthday and can be really pleased with their performance today and showed some real good teamwork both in attack and defence.  Despite the score New Tredegar can hold their heads high as they never gave up and put up a very spirited display.
