Don’t Kings-leave Me This Way

These days senior rugby is all about crossing your fingers and seeing who is going to be available for Saturday what with the dominance of the female species these days. You don’t really expect it with Under 8s but this weekend we were without ten players as many of them were seduced by the bright lights and decided on an all dayer in Cardiff (and Shay’s little brother had a birthday party)

That meant the Crazies were down to a bare eight but they still managed to take to the pitch at the Bridge Field to face Bedwas RFC with a strong looking side.

From the off it was apparent that Bedwas had been practicing their passing as they were comfortable shipping the ball between them but they had no answer for the tenacious Oakdale defence and conceded six tags before making 10 yards forward.

With the ball in their possession the Crazies set the Griffmeister free and he sailed passed the clambering defence to notch his first of the morning. The game re-started, Bedwas dropped the ball Tovey picked it up and scored straight away to make it 2-0 to the Dale. Sporting a snazzy pair of new socks on the morning Harri Williams wasn’t going to let Griff steal the limelight and with his first touch of the ball he ran wide and scored one for himself in the corner.

JJ and Max were leading the defensive effort and as much as they wanted to go forward Bedwas were continually being pegged back in their own half. Once again they had to give up possession because they lost six of their tags and the ball found Kingsley who danced his way through a number of defenders to score the fourth try without reply. With that the first period ended at 4-0 to the Crazies.

After a quick swig of squash the teams turned around and went at each other once again. Oakdale did switch off for a moment and let Bedwas score a try of their own but it was then Griff and Harri show once again as they took centre stage for the period with Harri getting two tries and Griff getting another two.

The two newest players in the team, Kian Davies and Zayn Hayman didn’t look out of place and were running straight and passing cleanly every time they touched the ball. They closed the space on the defenders and are quickly developing into important members in the team.

With the score 8-1 the Bedwas coaches were happy to go again so we turned around and the Dale re-started. Whoever got the ball in their hands were beating defenders everytime and this gave the crazies plenty of space to run into. This meant it was the second period all over again and no-one on the home side could catch Harri or Griff. This meant that Harri was able to get a hat-trick in the period and Griff added another two to his tally. Bedwas scored one more try but after 25 minutes play the score ended at 14-02 to the Crazy Eights.

Having only eight players to contend with was certainly an easier task than the full compliment of 18 but it will be good to get them all back next week as they were all missed in their own special way (including Coach Rhys). There was time to mention everyone when presenting the Shusher as they all played their part in an impressive victory, even super-sub, Leilan Davies got a mention. No doubt we will see him in a week or two when is he ready.

The Shusher could have gone to any of the seven players on the field. With Griff scoring seven tries and Harri six they were certainly contenders. With JJ and Max tagging with tenacity they also sttod out and Kian and Zayn did not make one mistake, in fact it was the second game running where we did not drop the ball.

But the Player of the Match was awarded to Kingsley ‘KPL’ Parry Lewis. At the end of the first period the players were asked to keep their width and not all go chasing the same player. KPL did that and was marshalling the other players into the line every time they defended. He took the direction given and implemented it effectively. What more can coaches ask for, well done Kingsley.
