It's a Ton-Up for the City on a Hill

Whilst the 2020/2021 season was a non-starter for all rugby teams in Wales, the 2021/2022 season is shaping up to be a momentous one for Oakdale Rugby Club as they will be celebrating their centenary year with an exciting calendar of events

The enforced lockdown facilitated the opportunity to undertake research on rugby in the village and it was found that although there were examples of rugby in the area from as far back as 1913, Oakdale Rugby Club itself was set-up to enter the western section of the Monmouthshire Junior Leagues for the 1921-1922 season.

Within five years the club managed to win the Cyrus Davies Cup and within ten years one of their former players, Trevor Thomas, went on to play for Wales against England in 1931.

Club Chairman, Christopher Thomas said, ‘We knew our history stretched back to the 1920s as we have team photos from that era. During Lockdown we were able to devote time not only to the history of the club but also how it entwined itself into village life. Over time we built up a compelling story that this coming season was actually our 100th year.

We have been working hard behind the scenes for a number of months to get the right planning in place so that all club members can share in this special season. We are arranging a number of prestigious fixtures for 2022, we have some notable events planned and we will be launching a number of celebratory initiatives in the coming weeks so that the 2021/2022 season will be a season to remember for Oakdale Rugby Club.’
